Piers Lane, piano - 7:30 pm, Saturday 1st October 2011
London-based Australian pianist Piers Lane has a flourishing international career which has taken him to more than forty countries. He is renowned for his performances of the core piano repertoire, and we are delighted he is coming to Sevenoaks to open our 2011-12 Season with three very different works.
His recital will open with what is generally considered technically and musically the most challenging of Chopin's four Ballades. Scriabin was following Chopin when he wrote his set of 24 preludes covering all 24 keys. These pieces give a wonderful insight into the sound world of the composer's early works (he went on to write many more preludes).
In the second part of his recital Piers Lane will play the second of Schubert's last three piano sonatas, works which fascinate musicologists and captivate listeners.
- Chopin: Ballade No 4 in F minor, Op 52
- Scriabin: 24 Preludes, Op 11
- Schubert: Sonata No 20 in A, D959
