Castalian String Quartet

The Castalian String Quartet are quickly emerging as one of the most exciting and in-demand quartets on the world stage. Their performances have been hailed as ‘full of poetry, joy and sorrow’ and ‘realised to such perfection’ (The Observer). They are the inaugural Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the University of Oxford.

They will open their programme with one of Haydn’s landmark Op 20 quartets. These epitomise the mastery Haydn had achieved, a mastery which led to him being known as ‘the father of the string quartet’. The Quartet will close the first part of their concert with one of the six quartets Bartók wrote. These draw not only on the European classical and Roman c tradi ons, but also on East European folk music, which was a great interest of Bartók’s. The Castalians will end our season with Schubert’s lyrical last quartet, an innovative work not published un l twenty-three years a&er the composer’s untimely death at the age of thirty-one.
