Alec is well known locally, having at one time been principal horn in the Lydian Orchestra and Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra. He now divides his time between solo recitals, chamber music and orchestral playing. He is a regular concerto soloist and can often be heard on BBC Radio 3. He was a member of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme 2014-16 and is now Principal Horn of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist, Alec has been keen to explore the use of instruments from the 19th century and he appears regularly in period-instrument ensembles, most notably with Ensemble Marsyas. Alec was recently appointed Professor of Horn at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Alec's recital for Sevenoaks is based on the life of the early-19th century virtuoso Giovanni Punto, and the great twentieth century horn player Dennis Brain:

  • Mozart: Concert Rondo K. 371
  • Giovanni Punto: Concerto no. 11
  • Beethoven: Horn sonata
  • York Bowen: Horn sonata
  • Gilbert Vinter: Hunter's Moon
  • Francis Poulenc: Elegie
