The Marmen Quartet are the current String Quartet Fellows at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. They have won a string of awards, most recently the Grand Prize at the Bordeaux International String quartet Competition and first prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, where they were also awarded the Haydn and Canadian Commission prizes. They have undertaken extensive European tours, and gave a Beethoven string quartet cycle during the 2019/20 season. The Marmen Quartet will play:
Haydn’s Op 64 quartets are among his more intimate offerings in this genre, with the interest shared among the instruments. While Haydn wrote dozens of quartets, Debussy wrote just one. Like most of Haydn’s, it is in four movements, but its idiom is of course totally different—a sensual and impressionistic work, from 1893. To finish this concert, and our season, one of the final set of Beethoven’s 15 quartets to be written, and his favourite.
