Since playing in our Young Musicians' concert some ten years ago, and subsequently gaining a First in music at Oxford, Savitri Grier has given recitals at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, as well as at several European festivals. Recent concerto performances have included the Elgar at St.John's Smith Square.

Savitri's regular duo partner, Richard Utley, graduated with a double first from Cambridge, since when he has been receiving plaudits for his recital and concerto performances. He is a passionate exponent of new music, and regularly commissions new works. Richard and Savitri have toured China together, and they have given a complete cycle of the Beethoven sonatas.

Savitri and Richard will play;

  • Beethoven: Sonata in F, Op.24 ('Spring')
  • Ravel: Sonata No.2
  • Beethoven: Sonata in C minor, Op.30, No.2

From Beethoven's canon of ten sonatas for piano and violin, Savtri Grier and Richard Utley have chosen two well-contrasted works. They open with a composition which is light-hearted and up-beat, reflected in the name by which it has become known. The C minor sonata, written shortly after the 'Spring' sonata, is a much more brooding work. These two sonatas are separated by music from another world, infused by jazz (the central movement is called 'Blues'). The title of the last movement gives a clue as to the ride awaitng us—'Perpetuum Mobile'.
